Cats :: Introducing...

No, it's not Anakin. Ivan and I are pleased to present the newest member of our family, little miss yet to be named!
I have been wanting to add a third kitty to the party for so long now but Ivan was not really into the idea (he is what stands between me and crazy cat lady status) so I dropped it. I had mostly given up on another fur baby until this weekend when I saw Ivan fall in love with a sweet little baby Anakin look alike at a pet store in Erie. I really prefer to bring home cats from shelters (Anakin and Farva were both rescues) so please no judgment on buying a pet store kitten. When it's love, it's love!
After camping, Kaylah, Kevin, Ivan and I made our way to Erie for our usual baked tofu sandwiches, junk shopping and visit to the photobooth. When we made it to the photobooth portion of our journey there was a cleaning man standing in front of it with his big gargabe container so we took a detour to the pet store.
I saw this cute little orange kitty right away and went and stuck my fingers and face up to the cage. She started pawing and meowing and I fell in love. I fall in love with cats pretty easily though so this is not really breaking news. The difference with this little kitten is that Ivan came over and stuck his fingers and face up to the cage and I could totally tell by the look on his face that he loved this kitty too. Ivan is definitely a cat lover (he was before I was) but he is not usually that interested in cats we run into at pet stores. That's how I knew that there was a chance we would be taking this little girl home. That, and when I asked Ivan if we had seen this kitty in Canada would we get her he said, "Mayyybe" in a way that totally means yes because usually Ivan's answer when we talk about another cat is absolutely not.
We walked away to look at the other animals and somewhere in there I had Kaylah look up on her phone the deal with buying animals in the States and taking them into Canada. I always thought it was not an option but apparently it is pretty common and no trouble at all. Well...the rest is pretty obvious. We took this litttle girl out of the cage, played around and finally Ivan said I had to make the final decision which he obviously knew would be yes.
So, that's the story of how we went camping and came home with an American cat. She totally has an accent when she meows. I really didn't think I would ever buy a cat at a pet store, or in America, or get one that looks almost exactly like Anakin but you can't help who you fall in love with.
There is still a bunch of hissing and growling going on over here which stresses me out a lot but I'm hoping that all the kitties will be best friends soon. I will keep everyone updated on our new princess and let you know what the heck we end up naming her. I was so unprepared for this!

  4. This post makes me so sad, I will no longer follow or support someone that calls themselves an animal lover and buys from a pet store. I hope you're happy with your decision to support breeding and the senseless death of animals in shelters. Sickening.

    1. I'm sorry you feel that way and I understand your concern. Please just remember that I do not judge anyone on their decisions even if I don't agree with them. I would bring home every shelter animal if I could and I feel like I do a lot in my life to prove my "animal lover" status.

    2. I don't think people should be mean about it. You acknowledge the fact that you know a pet store is not the best place to get a cat and you did get your other cats from shelters. I think what we do most of the time and what we try to do in our lives is what is important. She's a beautiful kitten and falling for her would be easy for anyone to do. I'm sure the others will get on well with their new little sister soon.

    3. Attitudes like that are what put people off vegans and prevent positive communication about the reality of our decisions as consumers.

Life is not black and white, as long as we all do as much as we can to support our causes, no one should judge. Elycia OBVIOUSLY cares about supporting shelter animals as clearly stated in her post.

Moving on, what an adorable kitty! I have heard that 95% of ginger cats are male, so I think she is a special one :)

    5. I know many people who see adopting pets from pet stores as another way to "rescue" an innocent animal from a bad situation. You may not feel that way since the money goes to the "wrong" people, but some people choose to make a difference in the life of one animal, regardless of where it came from. It's the same cause supported in a different way. I admire your passion, but not your judgement.

  6. I'm not really a cat person, but what a cutie!! I have to agree with you when its love its love. I also think its really unfair for someone to judge, because you decided to go with the decision you did. Shelter or store bought an animal just wants a home and a family to love it...off my soap box now!

  7. I love Farva (the black and white, right? I'm a newcomer to your blogworld)- my love, The Orbital Moosh, looks just like Farvster (sorry) but with half a mustache. I'm mourning the little friend who just left us- Boneless (he had no tail)- so I'm VERY happy to see that you have an addition! She needs love AS MUCH as a shelter cat. It's not her fault that her little kitty self ended up at the horrible HORRIBLE pet store. If she HADN'T been there, you'd never have found her- what could she do????

    1. Welcome! Yes, Farva is the handsome black & white guy. Awww! A half mustache is so cute! I'm sorry about your kitty Boneless, what an adorable name! I agree that it's not a kittens fault if they end up at a pet store. A lot of pet store cats are not from breeders anyways, they can be rescues too. I didn't ask for her story, maybe I should have just so I would know. She is totally not any kind of pure bred anything though! (not that I would judge anyone who got themselves a pure bred cat)
      Thank you for your comment!

  13. I knew it! I knew it was going to be a kitty when you mentioned something, that or some other type of animal! My first thought was, what animal did they find on a camping trip that they brought home! Heee! She is SO cute, I love those round eyes. I'm so excited for you. I don't see how anyone can judge you for giving ANY animal a good home, no matter where they came from. All cats and animals need a place to live, where they will be taken care of and loved.

  21. Oh she is so cute! Congratulations on your new family member!

And as a side note, I wish the so called "animal lovers" would remember that it isn't the kitty's fault she was in a pet store-- if you want to stop breeding, punishing animals in need of a loving home is NOT the way to do it. If you look in to reputable animal rights groups (i.e. not those groups who profit from the cause), you can find several ways to stop and/or discourage animal breeding without punishing our furry friends in the process-- going after the perpetrators of breeding instead of the animal victims is a good start!

A loving home is a loving home, and every kitten has a story. I don't think anyone has the right to judge you here - 2 of the 3 of your kitties are rescues, which is a hell of a lot more than most people do :)

A funny fact about store vs shelter - we got our dog from out local shelter - the shelter had just repossessed him & his sister through the courts from a pet store, as the pet store had been sending their employees into the shelter to buy all the cute and "pure looking" pups and kittens to sell on for exorbitant prices....
Also, when animals don't sell in stores, they generally get dumped at the pounds and shelters. I am in no way justifying pet stores, but I do believe that every animal deserves a great home no matter what, and this little miss has certainly found one - clever girl!

And namewise.... maybe a Twin Peaks one?!!! Could be amazing!

  26. What a cutie! It's actually pretty rare to see a female orange cat, so looks like you hit the jackpot. Such a struggle with the pet stores, I work as a vet tech and am going to vet school in January. It's so hard to see pets come from pet stores when I know there are plenty in shelters, but sometimes seeing the love a "bought" pet gets makes me understand a clients perspective a little bit. Anyhow beating up on blogger certainly won't produce any results, but writing an email or calling your congressman/woman and demanding stricter animal breeding laws and regulations seems like a better bet. Just
Congratulations on your new addition, adding cats to the family is certainly stressful but they'll all get on just great soon!.

  35. Ah! She is so cute! What an absolute beauty! I'm definitely pro-rescue animals but I'm never going to judge anyone on how they get their pet. When you love an animal it doesn't matter where it comes from. When I was little we ended up buying our dog from a breeder, we couldn't find anything suitable in any of the local shelters (they were all too big and boisterous to live in the city centre with two children under 10). Eventually we gave up and went to see a dog at a breeders house and as soon as we got there my mum decided she was vehemently against buying him, she didn't want to be putting any money in this man's hands. But, me and my little brother made a passionate argument about it not being the dogs fault and we came away with him that day. When it is love, it's love xo

Sira, was a gift from Santa at age 8, and Alex, I adopted him from the kennel of my city. But still like kittens! My boyfriend has a kitten that I gave him. Her name is Lucy and I rescued her from the streets. It's a little chubby and very tender girl.
Usually I rescue many animals. Last Friday night, I rescued a puppy of 2 months that I had to take to the pound.I wanted him to stay, of course. Anyway, I'm not against buying an animal, but I like to adopt one that really needs and it will not have a good home.

  87. Oh that's such a cute kitty! I read somewhere that it's rare to have a ginger female kitty so you have a special one on your hands. Aren't your other two cats male though? Maybe that will be a problem in the future haha :D

  89. She is so pretty and sweet!! Two of my family kitties were from pet stores. I support saving animals from shelters, stores, and the streets, so you definitely did the right thing and I'm so glad you were able to take her back to Canada! :) She's probably a bit older now but still, congrats congrats!!
