Photos :: Penny Collection

When we were in Chicago for Renegade back in September Kaylah and I both got pretty excited when we saw these penny collection books in one of the gift shops. I love collecting those little souvenir pennies but I end up leaving them in a coat pocket or the purse I was using that day. I had recently been finding a few of my older pennies so I just had to get a book so that I could keep them all in one place. I know, super dorky collection, but I love them!

Hehe! Isn't the little 'Penny Passport' so silly? I love it.
The reason I love these pennies so much is because they remind me of what I was doing when I got them. I don't have the best memory but I always remember getting excited about seeing a penny machine and choosing my favourite design. I am not a big souvenir person but these are really the perfect souvenir for me.

This is the oldest penny in my collection (that I can find anyways). Ivan and I got this penny at a big rest stop while we on our way down to Minnesota to visit my stepsister and her family back in 2008. If I am not somewhere specific then I like to get a penny that tells me some little fact about where I am...like the Monarch Buterfly being the State insect of Illinois!

This penny came from a trip down to Florida to visit my dad and step mom. It was 2009 and that was the year that Florida was unusually freezing! The day we went to the Edison & Ford Museum was so cold. We wore winter jackets and I remember wishing that I had mitts.

My Splash Lagoon penny is from the first day that Ivan and I met Kaylah and Kevin. We took photos behind those things that you just stick your head through (you know what I'm talking about right?) and got souvenir pennies. What a great day :)

I have five more pennies to share but I will save those for another day because I don't want to overload your brain with awesomeness. Actually, I do have one more thing to tell you that may cause brain overloading...I just discovered that there is a website and an app for finding souvenir penny machines! I am going to start checking if there will be any machines when I go places!

PS. A big huge happy birthday to Andrea!!!

  1. Ah, I'm such a geek for these penny machines! There's something about turning the giant press... I'm definitely going to look out for a penny passport and can't wait to see the others!

  12. I'm from the UK and we went to New York on honeymoon 3 1/2 years ago and we'd never seen them before so we got a whole bunch of them somewhere, when I find them I'm going to put them in a little jar of souveneirs we've got. Last month we went to an aquarium in our city for the first time and I was so excited when I saw they had a souveneir penny maker, and then really gutted when I realised we had no change on us. So if any one is ever in Bristol (England), check out the Aquarium ;)

  13. Oh man I love those things. I feel like the biggest dweeb cranking that wheel, though, but they are pretty awesome. I have been collecting those things for ages. I think I got my first one in Hawaii a little over 10 years ago. I'm glad I am not the only one that collects these. :D

  17. I've only seen a few of those machines. I think they're cool, but it's always so expensive that I just end up not getting one.

  18. Aaw, we have those in Australia! Thing is, there aren't any pennies in Aussie currency. So we enjoy "pressed copper spheres".

  20. Oh geez, I have one of these from middle school. I got them done at Mount Rushmore, niagra falls, grand canyon, black hills and a whole lot of other places. I need to pull it out and look at it again :)

  21. I've written about pressed pennies quite a bit on my blog: http://thatlongyellowline.wordpress.com/tag/pressed-pennies/
    Have you ever encountered the rare pressed dime machine? Mine was, sadly, a disappointment.
