Pregnancy :: 26 Weeks

26 weeks 1 day in photo

Nothing new and exciting to report this week on the pregnancy front. I feel like the baby is moving up and getting higher but that certainly isn't breaking news. Other than that, not much has changed since last week!

We ended up buying our cloth diapers last weekend but I will tell you more about those another time. We went to a really great store in Hamilton on Ottawa Street called Barefoot Babies. They are super helpful and even have a diaper expert who walked us through everything. It is such a great store and I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area thinking about cloth diapers. And no, I didn't get free diapers so that I would say how awesome their store is, I just think it is great and we will definitely be going back to look at baby carriers/wraps.

On the topic of baby carriers/wraps & baby wearing, does anyone have any good suggestions for different types? Anything that you absolutely love or didn't love? Any help would be appreciated!

Today we are off to the Baby and Toddler Expo in Hamilton to check it out and hopefully learn more about what we need for this baby.

  1. Let me preface by saying I have hip dysplasia (and have had three surgeries) and back problems. My favorite carrier so far (of the three I've owned) is the Ergo. I won't act like it never hurt my back carrying a big ass baby around in it, but I could do so for longer (hiked up a mountain in Alaska with Big Ass Baby) than the others I've tried. I got a neutral gray one (with stars!) so that my husband could wear her (because majestic purple is NOT his color, apparently), and give me a break from time to time. He mostly wore her around the house while I napped and he played video games, haha.

  6. My first baby was 30 years ago so things have obviously changed, but I absolutely love the snugli carrier for the first couple babies. then surprisingly 10 years after the first we had our trailer baby and the sling was just as awesome. Better even since she could nurse in it and now one would even know, you just pull some of the fabric higher and cover the little face a bit. plus the sling worked when she was a bit older too and rode on my hip. good luck with all of it, enjoy the ride! it goes as fast as lightening!

  7. I bow to you for giving cloth diapers a chance. Were I to have another baby I'd probably do cloth diapers after 6 months, because my first baby pooped at least 10-12 times a day (not to mention the pipi).

As for the carriers, I have "this one" by infantino and I love it. It's easy to put on, you can put the child in the front (facing you OR facing out) AND you can put him/her on your back. :P Plus, the child is high and close to your chest so you won't get back pain. My LO is 10mo and I still use it.

  10. you should look at teh blog "she breathes deeply" she just did a week of baby wearing and talked about different wraps, and the pros and cons. she also got the advice of other mothers so there's lots of advice/opinions/suggestions on there.

  11. I don't think I'v ever commented here before- so HI!
My kids were different on which carriers they preferred- the first had a very strong neck and amazing head control for a newborn, and he hated the Sleepy Wrap, but my second loves it still at 2.5 months.
I would recommend the Baby Hawk, it's easy to use and you can choose fabrics and what not.
I also have an Ergo and I really dislike it. So many straps and it wants to slip off my shoulders. But I know a lot of women love them, so I would just invest in a wrap and then after you kiddo is out go try on more structured carriers and see what works best for you!

  12. Elycia,

As a seasoned mom (3 almost 4 year old boy, pregnant with another - probably due in December), I would have to recommend you with something that clings the baby to you. The closer the better, so you can feel secure that the baby will not go ANYWHERE and that you can walk around comfortably without worrying about loose ends. Preferably something like this: https://www.google.com/shopping/product/16579206146155841942?q=baby%20slings&hl=en&safe=off&authuser=0&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.44770516,d.aWM&biw=1368&bih=631&sa=X&ei=g3FgUdHCC5LlqAGV84CwCQ&ved=0CKYBEPICMAs

Never get those purse slings. I had one and it made me feel uncomfortable all day while walking around with Zak.

    Hope that helps you out!

(This makes me excited for another bundle of joy in my life, just as much as I am excited for yours.)

  13. When my daughter was tiny (hard to believe she'll be three in a few days!), I used the Moby Wrap. It took a couple tries before I got the hang of it, but once I did, it was fabulous. The reason why I liked it so much is there are multiple ways to wear it!

  14. We use Huggies, I just couldnt get into the whole cloth diaper thing - there's just not enough time in the day and you end up doing soooo much laundry. but i commend you for deciding on them i cant wait to see how you like them :)

  15. Moby wraps are great for newborns, but too stretchy for when they get older. I loved my babyhawk mei tai when my kids got a bit bigger. The key for me is that it was super comfortable despite my back problems and their weight.

  17. Baby K'atan, its like the moby but way better and easier to put on and use

  18. I tried and tried the Moby, but that thing was a serious pain to tie. It's like 30 feet of fabric! We used a Snugli more than any other. In fact, I still use it and my son is almost three. Down side: the baby won't fit until he's a couple months old. But until then, you can tie him on with any piece of fabric... you know, like women have doen for centuries before parenting was a marketed demographic. :P

  19. This may seem like a weird question, but when you're out in public do you ever get people trying to touch your belly?

  20. Hi Elycia, I've been reading your blog for ages and I love you style. I work in a baby shop and so I have worn and researched the majority of the baby carriers we stock. I personally love the Hug a Bub as it gives such a close skin on skin connection and is excellent for newborns. Its very portable as you can wrap it in a pocket and the colours are pretty sweet. Thanks x

  21. I'm so excited for you, and so impressed that you're doing cloth diapers! They've really come a long way the past few years. My sister is using a wrap, but my niece has already outgrown in. I suppose it depends on how old they are to get the best one!

  22. I have an eight week old boy, and I never thought I'd miss my pregnant belly, but I do looking at yours! I'm about to start using cloth nappies for him as well, but when he was first born his legs were too little & everything leaked out the sides, eek. I actually sewed myself a sling to carry him around in, there's heaps of cool tutorials on pinterest. :)

  23. I have had about 5 carriers and used the Ergo most of all. My 22kg preschool still gets the odd carry.

  24. I had about 5 carriers and found the Ergo best, we still pop our big preschooler in it for bushwalks. Congratulations and goodluck x

  25. I've tried the ring sling, a mei tai, a woven wrap, and the Ergo, my very favorite above all else was the Ergo. Had we gotten an Ergo right off the bat I would not have gotten any of the other carriers; my husband however was skeptical about the steep price! I ended up getting a used one when my daughter was about 8-9 months old and after wearing her around in that all the other carriers pretty much went into storage. :p

That being said the one I used to most prior to that was the ring sling, its so perfect for newborns and up through about 15 lbs (so it lasted us until about 6-7 months) before it made my back start to hurt. I also really adore my woven wrap (its a BBSlen) but I wish I'd gotten a shorter one than the one I have because its kind of a pain keeping the fabric off the ground when wrapping in a parking lot or on wet ground. If I had a shorter one I'm sure I'd use it more. It did have a learning curve but I can get my daughter up on my back and securely wrapped in just a minute now.

I also love the Ergo because I can wear on my back as well, although baby sits a lot lower in this than when she is in a wrap. Anyway, all of these carriers are awesome. You can also wear the mei tai on your back when baby is older; I had a cheaper one by Infantino though so I could never get it on comfortably; lots of people love these things though. :)

So I guess my vote is 1: Ergo for all ages, 2: ring sling for newborn and early infancy, 3: wrap for all ages, just a learning curve, but its a breeze after, 4: mei tai.

Just avoid any crotch-danglers (bjorn) because that sucks for baby AND mama's back.
