photos > Diana F+, roll one

I was so excited a while back when I got my Diana F+ camera! I also ordered the 35 mm back so that I have the option to use 35 mm film. Here are 2 photos from my first roll of film (I used 35 mm).

When I got the film developed the girl told me that only 6 photos came out. I was like 'What? Wow, I need more practice with this camera than I thought!" I asked to see the sheet that showed all the photos so I could get an idea of what went wrong. There were tons of awesome photos!! Apparently she just didn't like my photography, haha. I asked her to please print all of them for me. I guess they are not supposed to print double exposures and anything that looks "bad". ouch, haha. Now I know to ask them to print everything no matter what it looks like. So, because of this I don't have any double exposures to show you, I have them in hard copy but they were not on the print CD that came with the photos and I didn't realize that. I could photograph them but that will have to wait for another day :)

I want to try shooting with 120 film. I haven't looked into it at all. Do most camera stores carry it? Do places develop it or do I have to send it away? I would appreciate any advice.

  2. There are always places to order it online, like lomography.com and im pretty sure uo carries it too! A lot of people say its expensive, but for what it is I don't really think so. The only place I know of that will develop that is this guy in a town next to mine who develops his own photos. I'm sure you could find someone, you just have to search a little or even look on yellowpages.com for your area for photo places.

I was wondering, where did you get your film developed? I'm looking to develop 2 rolls and I want to go to a place where I can JUST get them on the cd without ordering prints, do you know if thats possible?

  3. I've shoot with 120 film in my vintage kodak duel lens camera. I wasn't able to find it in any stores! I think they used to have it at Urban Outfitters, I got my rolls off ebay. I ran into the same problem when I got that film developed. The guy was like "well they printed but they aren't very good." thanks dude.

    Have fun!

  4. Any professional camera store should carry a variety of 120. If I were you, I would not return to where you printed these. It is unprofessional for them to choose what to print and what not to. You shouldn't have paid for that disc of images, or you should go back and demand a new one. It is not their job to decide what to print and what not to.

  5. I have a diana and I have tons of rolls to develop. During my research I found that there was no where in my town that develops the 120 film. Not even the camera stores! They don't even sell the film in the stores! I have to send mine to somewhere I find on the internet. sigh. That's why they have still not been developed, yet! Here's a website I just found that does the developing http://www.dwaynesphoto.com/newsite2006/color-neg-processprint.html
and if you're lucky enough to live in LA there's a whole lomography store! hpoe it helps!

  6. Theses are incredible. My first roll of Diana film was bad. REALLY bad. And I'm still getting the hang of it 1 year later! I shoot with all 120 film, but I got it from my dad who was a professional photogrpaher in the 70s. All the film he gave me expired in 1994, and it's AWESOME. There's lots of cool effects on the sides and you never really know what color you're going to get. Try shooting with it! I really like it.

  8. What is up with judgemental photo people? I've never been told that my photos didn't work out, even when they obviously suck ass and are WAY too dark or whatever.

I just got my first roll of Diana F+ (120) film processed...I was SO disappointed. There were like four that were okay. I should get the 35mm back too so it doesn't cost $25 to get back four photos I like, haha.

  9. We have an independently owned camera shop in town that carries and develops 120. The cost of the film isn't bad (I think it's 7$ or less) but the developing hurts a bit. But that's only because I usually take my 35 to WalMart and that costs next to nothing.

If you ever need some film you can let me know. I can make a trip to the shop for you!

  10. Eek! What a cheeky lady, she should appreciate beautiful photos when she sees them! :-)

  11. oh beautiful! I also have a Diana F+ with 120 b&w film..I bought mine from urban outfitters so I was able to purchase the film from them but I'm sure you could buy 120 film anywhere online. I don't think drugstores or one hour photos usually develop 120 film but I know that fancier camera shops usually do. I shot a whole roll but never got it developed...dang...soon I will try again!

  12. hahaha people in the photo labs are weird! few moths ago I had a similar situation with my lomo fisheye! I went to the lab to get my developed film, and they said: 'uh just few photos developed'. I went home, scanned the film (oh how good I have a film scanner) and I was like OMG almost the whole film was good! from tht time I develope just the film, scan the film at home and then develope it threw the internet. uh! ;D

  15. In Toronto, Henry's sells 120 film and Toronto Image Works processes it.

  16. My bf gave me a Diana F+ for my bday 2 weeks ago! I already finished the first 120 roll, I dunno about 'the states' or canada but here we can't develop it everywhere, there is a place that is specialized in photography and thats where I have to go. If I was you I would ask, maybe you'll have more luck. Im thinking on buying the 35mm back too. Good luck on the research!

  17. I recently shot my first roll of 120 film with my holga. I had it developed at henry's in ancaster. My first roll wasn't bad-there were a few pictures I really liked. I can't wait to shoot more. I bought my film from light leaks on the net.

  18. I've had the exact same problem with my holga photos! They didn't develop them, probably thinking they were fails. *face palm*

  19. thanks guys!
melissa, i was wondering if henry's in ancaster developed 120! ya! we must live close!

i understand why they didn't print all the photos, it was just a drug store, not a photo shop. apparently they have had people yell at them for printing photos that didn't turn out. poor people, they can't win! (although, of course I didn't yell at them)

  22. Whaaat?!? Ha! How very narrow of her! I'm sure they were lovely despite the attempt to limit your creativity.

  23. aw that sucks, it should be up to you what photos might not be up to scratch, not them ;) My local photo place always prints the full set, even if some turn out badly Ill be more thankful for that now hah..don't you just pay the one developing fee anyway no matter if they are good or bad?

I get my 120mm film on ebay, to buy it here (even the lomography official film) is like 3x as much as it is in the states.
Developing the 120mm here is also pricey about $25, but if you only do it sometimes, its well worth it!

Oh and I can totally vouch for the instant back on the diana f+, if you choose to get that someday ;) you can do amazing double exposures on instax film! really fun!!
I want the 35mm back for mine, but I think Im just going to buy the diana mini, nice excuse for a new camera haha.

cant wait to see your other pics!

    xx

  24. They turned out great! Can't wait to see those "bad pictures" hehe.. Last time I had a roll of film developed the lady gave them to me for free because "they didn't turn out good", but I loved them :)

  25. i have the diana too and the 35mm back. i have shot with both 120 and 35mm. i get my 120 film online. mostly at Adorama as they are usually the cheapest. i get it scanned on a cd at Photoworks in sanfrancisco: http://www.photoworkssf.com/
they are the cheapest i have found to send film to. where i live they will print 120 in camera stores but the price is just the same as sending it to photoworks plus shipping. good luck!

  26. 120 is hard to print in ontario. i live in windsor, and a friend of mine ended up developing his own in a dark room he built, because the only other option was sending it to somewhere near ottawa or something. that's the closest place to here that develops it.
