hair :: experiments in short hair styling

Just over a week ago I decided to give myself a haircut. My hair was pretty mad at me pre-haircut because I have not been treating it that nicely. It was breaking like crazy and basically crying.

So...I decided to chop off the middle layer to around my shoulders in an effort to even it out a bit and make it happier. I have been conditioning like crazy since then and my hair is starting to feel a bit better. Since the cut I have been playing around with different ways to style my shorter hair.
My original plan when I cut my hair was to stop heat styling it and just let my natural curl/wave do whatever it wants. That method of styling is really hit or miss because sometimes the curls are nice and sometimes they are nuts. I got the hair on the left by letting my hair dry naturally with a little bit of product in it. The one on the right came from pinning my hair up in little twists with bobby pins and then sleeping on it.
A lot of days I have been running back to my straightener so I don't have to worry about a potential hair disaster that I won't have time to fix.
I had been really in love with high buns before I cut my hair. It is just a smidge too short for them at the moment so I have been playing around with pigtail buns. I love them!

I am definitely still getting used to my new hair but I think it is a good thing that I cut it. Does it take you a while to get used to new haircuts? Anyone out there with hair my length that has a favourite way to wear it?

I hope you all have a great Monday! I always get so excited about the start of the week. So many possibilities! I am even starting to get over my sore throat/cold that suddenly showed up on Saturday, which makes me even happier!

  1. Your hair is so cute. ALL the time. I am properly jealous, but am well going to try out the curly version on the right!
I use my straighteners pretty religiously so it'd be a good change!!
(I also love the colour, good work!)

  2. your hair is so cute!

it always takes me a while to get used to haircuts too. right now i'm trying to grow my hair out, so only little trims for me.

my hair was really dry/damaged from dyeing too, but i recently got this shampoo/conditioner/leave in stuff: http://www.organixhair.com/category-title/342
seems to be helping a lot! You might try that if you don't already have a shampoo that you love.

  3. Your hair looks so cute! I love the purple and my favorite style is the first one on the left.
I've had the same problem as you. I always run back to the straightener but lately I've been doing good and not using it as much.

  4. Your so brave! After a very short haircut when I was 15 (gwynneth paltrow-sliding doors short)I have been growing it ever since (11 years) I have had trims etc but can't imagine cutting it all off again! Yours looks so cute Im very tempted to call the hair dressers though! Love the face in the 2nd pic!x

  5. this is about how short mine is right now --- and i love it! i wear a lot of headbands with it. your hair seems a lot like mine, and I don't use a straightener at all (my hair seriously rebels if I do!!!). My trick is to put Bedhead's curly leave-in conditioner in my hair right after i get out of the shower. i generally kind of dry it a bit with my towel, and then let it do its thing! i'm kind of an expert on curly/wavy hair products--- i've just about tried them all! so if you want any info on which ones are better or whatever, i'd be glad to help! :)

  6. You rock the short hair!
I have prettttty long hair right now, longest it's ever been! Its a hassle to style, so I usually just leave it or put it up. I wish I could just cut it short sometimes - but I don't think I'd be able to work it very well. Ah well!

I love the two buns :3

  9. your new hair color is adorable! I love it! I wish I was brave enough to play with that type of color, but I'm a wimp. haha. Your short hair is adorable on you also! It looks great. Sometimes I think there are plenty more things to do with short hair than with long.
    Take care lovely!

  10. Very cute!!! I had my hair that length last year and now it's halfway down my back! The piggy buns look cute on you! I always did pig tails when I would grow my hair out, but I love short hair too :)

  11. I think it looks adorable! I know what you mean about your hair crying..mine was over bleached/dyed/bleached and crying then I started using Joico Kpak reconstruct leave in treatment, and it really makes a ton of difference! I usually put it in once a week, for the whole day/sleep in it then wake up and wash it out and its all silky. I bet though giving it a little cut makes it feel even nicer already <3 xx

  13. I've had short hair for over 3 years and while I've always loved it, I get frustrated that there's just not much you can do with it. Sometimes I'd give anything to be able to put it in a cute bun or fishtail braid!
(Love your pigtail buns! I wish my hair was long enough to let me do that!)

  14. What awesome hair color you have and used to have! I'm in my mid forties now and still sporting some bright red and/ or pink. Curious to hear what brand of hair dye you use? :-)

  15. I'm in the process of growing my hair out again and it's about your length... I have such a hard time getting it to do anything good! Especially since I've been going to the gym and washing out my good bedhead almost every day...

It usually ends up in a pony or pigtails... still too short for much else (and too long to pin up nicely!!)

  17. CowRoad, I usually use Punky Colours (it's my favourite) but I have also used manic panic and Special Effects before.
In these photos I have Punky Colours Purple over Special effects raspberry with some punky colours turquoise patch over both.

  18. Any hair style/cut you have is adorable! I just colored my hair and also have a little fringe, too. I don't really like the color, but whatever...I can change it! :)

  19. Your new haircut looks SO good!! Loving all of the different styles! You're so cute, aha!

  20. Your hair looks just perfect right now! The color and the style. I've been having this dilemma for quite a long time now.. to grow my hair out or to cut them short. I've had them really short a few times and I really loved it but then again there are fewer possibilities to braid them pretty which I love the most. And I'm so amazed when I see pretty girls with long beutiful hair, I just want my hair to be like that but I simply have no guts to grow them out.

  21. i think you look gorgeous with that length!! i use bumble & bumble sea spray and i really like the way it works with my hair. also i use deva curl which is a shampoo & conditioner for curly hair that gives you more moisture for your curls.

  25. I just cut my hair too last week, because MY hair was breaking too! :( my hair was so uneven, so I've had to trim it a little, and I'ma dye my hair this week.

Your hair looks lovely though! I personally love just tieing my hair in a bun and accessorising it with a headband x

  26. Elycia! I love your new hair, oh so totally cute. I had to cut my hair several months ago since I got tired with the straight cut. Just gave myself some layers and it looks amazing.

    Nice job! :]

  27. Oh jeez your hear is breathtaking! I've cut my hair last friday because it was so dry, crazy and all breaking! I think it's a tiny bit longer than yours right now. And I love your curly hairdo!

  30. I cut all my hair off this year-and totally love it! I'm never going to grow it out again. The only thing that's a pain is the maintenance of a regular haircut to keep its shape.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ooh, I love it! Mine is about the same length and curly, but it's really, really fine so when it's having bad days I'm convinced I look half-bald!

  32. I love the little pigtail buns!! I like wearing my hair up ALL THE TIME so whenever I cut it short I start panicking about not being able to wear it up anymore.. next time I take the scissors to my locks I'm definitely going to do pigtail buns now :)

  33. Holy freg you're cute! The natural air-dry one on the left is amazing. You should really where it that way more often. Especially if it's better on your hair. That said, I love the straightened look too. You really can't go wrong when you have beautiful/colourful hair like you! <3

  34. Love your hair!!
I have short hair also, except mine is to my shoulders. Lately I've been taking the back and sides of my hair and pinning them back with bobby pins and leaving my side bangs down and a little piece on the other side down also. I think it looks cute :)

  35. the cut and the color look soooo good together!
the way it changes to purple right at the end just sets it off so well.

  36. Wow, your hair is so cute when it's short! :D I have hair that's about your length... and I want to chop it off!!! I'm more of a really-short haired person, but that's just me :) I usually put some product in my hair, and then blow dry it until it's just damp and let it dry naturally after that. It ends up with a nice little flip on the ends! :) I see you got your tattoo colored in! It looks awesome! :D

  40. Thanks Elycia! I'm using manic panic (vampire red I believe) which works much better than the 'beyond the zone'. Never heard of Punky Colours or Special Effects so will check them out. Thanks again! :-)

  41. Hey Elycia, i followed you from a moment now and i just wanted to say how cute you always look on your self portrait. You don't make fake faces, the pictures feels like you (i don't even know you! but them make me believe i do haha) That's what i like about following you, you're natural and funny.
I love the last one in the post where you have a red dress on. You look like a cartoon :) Very pretty.

  46. Your hair is utterly adorable! I have weird wavy hair that is sometimes quite straight and sometimes very curly. I wear it long currently but I am SO bored with it!! Do you think short hair would work?
