cake pops

For Christmas I got a cake pop maker from my mom! I actually knew I was getting it because we were shopping together one day and I saw it and loved it and then my mom said she would get it for me for Christmas. I couldn't wait to get my hands on that little thing and make some cake pops.
Now, I know you can make them without a cake pop maker but I currently can't do that because our oven doesn't work! We are planning on buying a new one soon but for now this little cake pop maker will be our supplier of baked goods.
I thought they would be super easy to make and they kind of were...but making them also kind of stressed me out and I may have said "I'm never doing this again" a few times.  I was making multiple batches and it got better once I figured out a system that worked well for me.
A few tips:
1. If the directions recommend using a pastry bag or ziploc bag to fill the cake pop maker, you probably should. (I didn't)
2. Attach the sticks to the pops by first dipping the sticks in melted chocolate and then allowing them to cool/harden before trying to coat the entire pop. I did this from the start but I have heard of lots of people having trouble getting their pops to stay on the stick.
3. Instead of dipping your pop into the chocolate to coat it, use a wooden spoon to drizzle chocolate onto your pop until it is covered. Also...don't coat them too heavily or you will get lots of drips!
4. A "not too heavy" coating of chocolate also helps to make your sprinkles stand out more. My first few pops had sunken sprinkles!
5. Use foam or a cake pop holder placed in the freezer to hold your pops while the coating sets. Afterwards you can transfer them to the fridge to store.
I kind of wish I had taken a video of me trying to make these in the beginning. I'm sure it would be pretty funny to watch me freaking out over cake pops. I'm sure next time it will be much easier and I know that the results are adorable and delicious so it is definitely worth it!

Have you ever made cake pops?

ps. Astrid, I borrowed the plate I found for your mom for these photos! hehe!

  3. Oh these look delicious! And I didn't know you had something like a cake pop maker! I've made some cake pops before Christmas and I made a post about it: http://daphinitly.blogspot.com/2012/01/recipe-3-cake-pops.html

They look so different from eachother. But I'm sure they both are delicious! ;) I was also freaked out and frustrated! Now afterwards I can laugh about it, it's a bit tricky to make them but they are definitely worth it!

  7. I had no idea that a cake pop maker existed! What fun that would be to have for a party or something! If they were that frustrating to make with a cake pop maker, I bet they would be even harder to make without one. Maybe I'll just stick to buying them from others :)

    Have a great day!

  10. They came out so cute!

I made some snowman cake pops for my company's holiday party! After I made about 30, I was pooped! They're definitely a process, but are so tasty!

Here's a link to the snowman cake pops I made! :)

  11. Niiice... My mom bought me the little silicone cake pop pans to go in the oven. I'm curious to try it but kind of scared. I've tried to make them before by rolling them on my own but they would never stay on the sticks. They were just too heavy! I am a little intimidated to try but they are so cute!

  13. I'm still skeptical about those makers, I make them from scratch and while they can be a pain in the ass I wonder if those tend to be dry (since the others have frosting in the mixture). Anyhow videos help to get an idea of how to go but you'll find what works best for you. The good thing about that is that they'll be almost the same size with that maker, its trickier to do that by hand.

  14. I think they're really cute! I haven't made cake pops before, but I've had the ones from Starbucks(I LOVE those things! :D) and my mom found a recipe for them in the newspaper. We WERE going to make some last summer, but we kind of forgot... XD

  15. Oh yay!!! A cake pop post!!! I'm really excited that you posted this and I love your tips. I also did not use a baggy for the batter, I used a spoon which resulted in some huge and some teeny cake pops. :P I also agree that it's super frustrating at first and I may have sworn a few times during my first try, but like you said, you DO figure out a pattern!!!

  20. I've made cake...balls before. They were going to be pops, however my local grocery store didn't have any sticks in stock! They were made by hand and far too labor intensive for a repeat performance (but super delicious! And living in a house with 5 other girls at the time they didn't last long.)
However, I have the Babycakes donut maker and it's super easy to use now that I have the hang of it. Maybe the cake pop maker is in my future?

  21. Yum, these look good! I made cake pops a couple of years ago for my sister's birthday... they uh, were interesting haha. I had like 6 neon colours that I turned them & I just molded them with my hands (it looked like playdough) and my hands turned all sorts of colours. I melted the chocolate onto the stick so that it would stay, but when we got back from dinner some of them were on the middle of the stick. Haha. And no one ate them. Oh well, they looked cool... ahahha.

  22. Ha ha, I made my first pie crust over the holidays, and I was similarly freaking out about it...may have even thrown a tantrum that involved slapping the pie pan. But the end result was so good!

Your cake pops turned out really cute :)

  24. Love making cake pops!! I know they're pain in the (you know what) but they taste so delicious I don't even mind the mind numbing hours it took me to roll them by hand, coat them by hand and then decorate. Maybe I need the cake pop maker? hmmm... ;)

  26. What a coincidence, my mum gave me a cake pop maker too this year at 'Sinterklaas', which is the European Santa Claus :-)
I've ,ade cakepops several times now and it worked great for me, I used regular batter voor making cake and baked them 5 minutes each time :-)
