home :: baby garden

It has been so fun for me to watch our fruit trees and grapes grow. The grapes are growing at an alarmingly fast rate and seeing the tiny plums and pears grow a little everyday is so neat! I snapped some photos for my own enjoyment but I thought I would share the cute baby fruit with you guys as well.
Another cool thing about the grapes is the little feelers (?) they send out to grab onto things. They grab hold and wrap themselves around with little curly tentacles (?). I know tentacles is not the correct term but I like it.
Our poor plum tree is slightly diseased and I think I need to cut off a ton of parts. I read something that actually recommends cutting the diseased parts off in June and then burning them! That's intense. You can see a bit of the yuckiness in this photo. It is that lighter brown part right in the center of the photo. That will eventually turn black and disgusting. Gross.
These raspberries actually snuck over into our yard from our neighbour's garden. I'm pretty sure they are raspberries and while we do have our own bush planted, I don't think we will be getting any fruit from it this year. I'm pretty excited that these little guys spread into our yard!

In case you can't tell I am so insanely excited about our garden it should be illegal. Watching things grow is the best!

  1. Yay! Be careful of those berries-- the previous homeowners at our place planted some, & now they are taking over the side yard. We've tried trimming them back, cutting them off & even, in an act of desperation, used weed killer & those suckers keep coming back (there are waaaayyy more berries than we could ever eat). We've now resigned ourselves to them (on the plus side, bunnies love them & are soooo cute!)

    1. Berries really do have a knack for taking over! Our raspberries aren't nearly as bad as our blackberries, those things come back with a vengeance!

  2. I absolute love this blog post! I can't wait to see your fully grown fruits and your garden! I think there is nothing better than home grown fruits, especially the rapsberry and the strawberry. So yummy! ;D

  3. One word: *jealous!* I daydream about going out to my backyard in the hot summer, plopping down on the grass and eating berries picked right off the tree. Unfortunately, I live in a second-story apartment with hardly any greenery, much less fruit trees.
    Maybe one day... (sigh)

  4. Yay! I want a garden so badly, my mom and I tried having a little one but our golden retriever used it as his favorite potty area and killed everything :( We just can't have a nice yard with two giant dogs. Booo...LOVE these pics tho, yay!

  9. We are having fun watching our garden grow as well. We were able to plant a pretty big garden, and we have a bunch of "fruit" trees but the lame kind that you can't eat. Like crab apples. But we do have a mulberry tree that has given us lots of yummy berries!

  13. Dear Elycia, it's so much fun watching things grow! :) We have a balcony and this year, it's the first time I have planted and grown my own herbs and vegetables and I love being on the balcony, everything's so green and colorful, it's my little oasis. :)

  14. I would love to have berries and grapes!
    Darn gophers have killed (almost) everything in our garden :(
    This year I'm thinking of building a raised box.

    However our trees are doing quite well we have lemon, orange, lime, calamansi, loquat, peach and plum trees. All full grown except for the peach, plum and a second orange tree are about 4 feet now and are growing their first fruit ever! The lime still hasn't had any fruit though :(

  15. That really is the best! My family and I have an extensive garden in the backyard full of trees, small plants, and shrubs. It's amazing to see them start out small and bloom. Love it.

    Your garden looks great. Keep us updated ! :)
