Not my regular type of post (you've been warned)

I was debating whether or not I wanted to post about this. Despite having a blog and sharing a lot online I am a pretty private person and don't like everyone to know all of my business. You have probably noticed that I keep my blog pretty positive and I'm a little worried about sneak attacking you guys with some sad stuff. In this case I really want to share this though because it would feel wrong to pretend that everything is fine when it is not.

On Thursday afternoon my Grama, who I was very close to, passed away. It was slightly unexpected but not totally because she had been in the hospital for a few months now. I don't really want to focus much on this part though. I just wanted to talk about how awesome my Grama was.
I spent a lot of time with my Grama while I was growing up. I have been told that when I was really little I couldn't say Grama and I would run around calling her Munga. I loved watching my Grama play Nintendo (which she still did up to the time she went into the hospital) while eating cheese & mustard sandwiches. My Grama taught me how to knit and later how to sew. She would make us tea and give me Arrowroot cookies.

My Grama was a great talker and could tell stories all day long. She said hilarious things and so many people who met her told me how witty she was. She had a good sense of humour and I felt like I could say anything to her.

I loved my Grama very much and I will miss her everyday. I'm sure I am forgetting so many little important details that I want to share but I'm happy to have had the chance to tell you a little bit about what a cool Grama I had. Oh yeah, one more cool thing was that my Grama spelled Grandma differently than anyone else I have ever seen. She's the original rebel.

Today is all the funeral stuff so I know it will be kind of a hard day. It will be nice to see everyone who loved my Grama all in the same place though.

Thank you so much for reading this.

  1. I am so sorry, lovely lady. I was never close with my grandparents, however I wish I was. You should feel very proud that you two were so close, that is beautiful. Lots of warmth your way. Remember, at least in my opinion (yours may differ!) she'll always be with you.

I understand (at least to some extent) what you are going through and I hope you can find some peace and hope in the days ahead.

Thank you for sharing such a personal part of your life with us. I wish you all the best,

  7. What a sweet post Elycia :)
I know how you feel because I felt the same way years ago when my grandma passed away!
I grew up with her and she told me tons of fun stories about her life!
    she was an amazing woman!
She lost her husband (my grandpa who I never met because when he died my mother was a little girl) and my grandma grew up 3 children by herself!
I really respect her life and she inspires me everyday!
Think about the amazing life she spent with people who loved her! :)
    Love you
    xoxo

  22. I know you hear this a lot, but my condolence for you loss. I know what is to have a gradma that raise you and it's not your second mama, is more then that. To have a gradma that is a lot like you, and teach you a lot of things. I know what is to have a lively gradma that can keep up with you. And see her faith away a little time by time. I haven't lost my gradma yet. I just lost my grandpa that was like a protector of mine. But I imagine that I will feel like you. I believe that the only away to honor her is to live her through you.

Hope you find the peace you need.

    Kisses

I've no doubt these next couple of months in particular will be hard, but you've got people around you that love you and will help you through your grief. Don't ever feel bad for your feelings, it's a journey, and everything will seem a little brighter eventually even if it doesn't feel like it right now xxx

  27. So very sorry to hear that. Both of my grandmas are gone. This month will be 5 years since my closest grandma passed. It still hurts today, but I really try to think of the good times before she got Alzheimer's and couldn't recognize me anymore. You're very lucky to have had your grandma in your life. Hugs! Jes

  29. Elycia, I can totally relate to how you feel about your Grama. My grandma was so cool that her swag was on fire everywhere she went and everyone knew it. I'd rather hang out with her than girls in my own middle or high school, she was that cool.

My grandmother always told me that when she is gone one day, not to mourn over her loss..but to celebrate her memory and to bring everyone the memory of fun and happiness through her existence. It was hard at first for my loss back in 2008, but when I had my son on her birthday the next year, I knew that even with a loss so hard...she was there with me and would give me a life that could make her smile.

Plus, she gave me an amazing man a year or so later in Colorado, of which I decided to move in order for my son and I to be with. Special grandmas open special doors for their grandchildren, so think of it that way! ;]

  56. elycia, i am so sorry to hear for your loss. i lost my beloved grandmother on new years day last year. you are going to go through some hard times and you wont want to share it on the blog. that's completely ok. be honest that you're sad, be honest that you're not being honest. we will be here. but dont let yourself stop talking about it with the people you love. i stopped crying about it with my boyfriend bc i was afraid i wasnt allowed to anymore and i went into a very dark and bad place. grieving is a process people dont talk about a lot, so when it comes time for you to go through it, you dont know how to act. take care of yourself during this time. we are all here for you.
