Pregnancy :: 24 Weeks

24 weeks 1 day in photo
This week we went to a home birth information night and it was awesome. We knew from the beginning that was the route we wanted to take but it was nice to hear even more about it. When I used to hear about people giving birth at home I thought they were nuts, but that's only because I had no idea what it involved. Last summer I asked my friend Chantilly a million questions about it and decided that it was not even close to nuts and that I would love to have one some day. As of right now everything looks good for us to have the baby at home so I hope things stay that way.

Still no new developments on the movement front. I'm still feeling the same type of muffled stuff. I can't wait for the week that I get to say that I got a good hard kick. Ha!

We have a pretty full schedule this weekend and I'm excited about it. I hope everyone has a good one!

  1. Hi elycia, congratulations on your baby news! I had a home birth with my son in Dec '12. It was a truly phenomenal experience! It's awesome to hear that you are inquiring and heading down that road if all goes well. I read a lot of Ina May Gaskin books which are fantastic and written from the '70s ~ some really rustic experiences and vivid imagery used like 'it was pyschodelic'!! All the very best!

  2. I'm so jealous (but thrilled for you!) that you're choosing a homebirth. I desperately want one, but I've been risked out of it. Boo!

  3. My first was born in the hospital and fortunately I could stay at home when I had my second, and it was so much better than in the hospital! First of all, being in the car while having contractions really sucks :-) Second, not being able to move around or be in a space that's not familiar is not as nice as being in the comfort of your own house. Third, stepping into your own shower after delivery is true bliss!
Here in the Netherlands it's more common to stay at home, but I must say that it really is better than having to leave your house.

  4. I've always thought that the idea of a home birth was completely crazy. To me, it just sounded nightmarish. But then I read the post Chantilly wrote about her home birth, and it changed my mind completely. After reading about her experiences, I actually thought the whole thing sounded quite nice, (well, not nice, exactly, but a lot more personal and a bit less confronting than a hospital birth).

  6. I really wish you all the best for your baby <3 I once saw a report about a woman who gave birth to her daughter at home, and it was absolutely amazing. Best of luck that you can do it, too!

  7. It must be crazy to all of a sudden start thinking about giving birth at home and preparing everything, while you never had to before! I'm sure you're very excited. Home birth sounds a very intimate thing and it must be a more special experience than when you do it at the hospital.

  8. I started watching the BBC series Call the Midwife this week and it's completely changed my views. I would love to have a home birth one day. Love watching your bump grow :)

  9. I had an anterior placenta with my first child and I didn't feel a single movement until 22 weeks. I know how discouraging it can be to hear people talk about feeling movements at 14 or 16 weeks and your sitting there wondering if your baby is kicking or if you just have gas. Don't worry though! It happens! By the eighth month my son would be kicking so hard and doing so many flips that he would actually jerk me around in my chair. It became hilarious to watch my belly constantly jump from left to right and I forgot all about the earlier weeks of barely feeling anything.

    You'll get there!

  10. It's pretty amazing how quickly home birthing has come to be viewed as this totally crazy thing, when women having been giving birth without hospitals for thousands and thousands of years. Not that I think having hospitals as back up plans aren't a remarkable thing, and totally necessary in certain situations (and I totally recognize how they have saved many lives), I'm just so glad that home births are becoming more of a thing and less outlandish in our culture! Women's bodies are incredible things totally capable of giving birth on their own the vast majority of the time, so it's fantastic that women and their partners are choosing to empower themselves to give birth to their healthy babies with their healthy bodies in a comfortable home environment without medical intervention. I hope that everything continues on a course to enable you to have your baby at home! It will be so great.

  14. Be careful what you wish for! ;)

I wish desperately that I could home birth- for health and legal reasons, it's not a good idea for us. I'm so glad you're getting informed about the options for your family!

  16. I'm so excited for you. I loved my home birth and wouldn't dream of trading it for an epidural and machine's that go bing. As you know, I had an incredible birth experience in the hospital with midwives as well :) I know you'll be in good hands no matter where that lovely baby is born. I would love to see this with you in April, http://birthstorymovie.com/screenings/ Let me know if you'd like to go.

  18. You look so cute!

We had a homebirth this last October with our son. I loved it - especially since I had a really long labor (24 hours). It was so amazing to be in our own home and labor in whatever room or position I wanted to. You'll love it!
