a small challenge for myself

Ivan and I talk a lot about how we want to become more self sustaining and minimize the amount of things that we need to buy. We have been baking our own bread, brewing our own beer, preparing for a big garden this summer, eating at home as much as possible, looking into making our own soap, shampoo, etc.
But then, you know, I see some shoes online or an amazing dress that I feel like I need to have and all of those thoughts of minimizing consumerism kind of get thrown out the window for five minutes while I am making my purchase. This is something that I really want to change about myself. I don't need (and quite frankly, can't afford) to buy everything that I like.

I do love to add new things to my wardrobe but I will be doing it in a different way. Some of you may have heard me mention on Instagram a few weeks back that I made myself a dress. I have tons of fabric and tons of vintage patterns so why the heck have I been buying clothes?

I have decided to set a little challenge for myself not to spend any money on clothes or shoes unless it is an absolute necessity. For example, if an underwear bandit breaks into my house and steals all my undies I will probably have to restock. I feel like I will be able to do ok as I really do have a lot of clothes already in my closet and I am able to make a lot of things by using patterns and fabric I already have.

For my first project I decided to make myself a dress. I used this pattern:
And this fabric that I have been hoarding forever.
The only change I made to this pattern was to eliminate the zipper. This fabric has a bit of stretch to it so that I am able to easily pull it on over my head.

And just because I want to make this "not buying things" thing more fun I have decided to show you three different ways that I styled my dress based on different colour schemes because, let's be honest, I think about my outfits in terms of colour all the time.
:: necklace, c/o Dapper Toad :: belt, thrifted :: socks, Mom gift :: shoes, c/o Blowfish ::
:: scarf, vintage :: brooch, thrifted :: tights, mall :: shoes c/o Blowfish (last year) ::
:: glasses, Warby Parker :: cardigan c/o ModCloth :: necklace c/o Paper Sparrow :: belt, thrifted :: tights, Walmart :: shoes c/o ModCloth ::

I am really happy with my new dress and can't wait to make more things to free up some space in my fabric containers!

To be honest, I actually kind of feel like I'm cheating a little bit with this challenge because 1. I get a few c/o items here and there and 2. I am a mega hoarder and probably already have enough fabric to make myself clothing for the rest of my life. Realistically I'm sure there will be things that I buy just because they would be too much of a pain in the butt to make. I guess my main goal is just to think a little more before I spend.

I have been doing this for a few weeks already without any issues. Although...I have been avoiding thrift stores because it is really hard to turn down amazing thrift finds.

  2. This is a great idea, I actually took this pledge (http://seamlessblog.wordpress.com/the-pledge/) myself a while ago and it was great. I've finished it now but it's definitely made me change how I buy clothes.

The dress you made is gorgeous!

  3. Wow, what a gorgeous dress! Good job! Also, the neutral colors- B&W- make it easier to dress it up with all your colorful accessories. Gorgeous!

  4. This is a great dress, Elycia! I have been trying to limit my spending as well, but sadly I am not a talented seamstress like you are, so no new dresses for me :( Mostly, I have just been trying to re-work my closet and appreciate what I already have instead of yearning for things that I shouldn't spend money on. Kudos to you on your endeavors! Also, that bread looks amazing. If you wanted to mail me a loaf, that would be alright.

I recently posted about blogging and consumerism and while I'm not a fashion blogger, I'm working on buying less and making due with what I have! http://eef-etc.com/2012/blogging-consumerism/

  8. Hi Elycia,

I loved reading this post. And I think that you already do much by eating vegan. If everyone would only do that, the world would be better. Plus, I think it's ok to thrift clothes. That doesn't do any harm to the earth, only your budget ;)
It's my goal, too, to reduce my consumption. No easy task. I started buying more expensive clothes that last longer and don't have to be thrown away after one year. And I visit clothes-exchange-partys, where the old clothes I don't like anymore find new lovers :)
I'm a vegetarian and try to eat more vegan, and I avoid domestic flights.I don't have a car and don't plan on buying one.And gifts for my friends are all handmade, either by myself oder a lovely etsy-seller.

  9. I'm right there with you on wanting to be more self sustaining. Over the past three years my fiance and I left LA and bought land in WV where we are building a eco friendly house, that will eventually have solar panels, a cistern/tin roof to collect water. It has been a very long process but I am so excited about the fact of being more self sustaining and a little better to the environment. Even though we still have a ways to go on the house up here we have already moved up and are living in our tiny little cabin home, and have already started planting fruits and veggies in our greenhouse, and there have been talks about getting chickens for eggs! Which I am kind of beyond excited about! My fiance grew up around farm animals, I however did not so the little kid in me is so wonderfully excited!

I really love hearing about other people doing what they can to be more self sustaining, I think every little bit helps. And I really love that you are making your own dresses now! That pattern is so wonderfully adorable and looks great on you every way you styled it! I've always really wanted to try that, but just haven't gotten around to it quite yet, but it is definitely on my list :)

Ahh sorry about my novel of a comment. I just got a little over excited hehe!

  10. I've honestly been thinking more and more about the self sustaining thing lately - though for me it's not very possible as I live with my parents in the city, go to school in the city, and will probably end up having to live in the city at least for a while after school! So what I CAN focus on is not spending on clothes as much as I can ;)

Does thrifting really count as buying into consumerism though? I mean if you go every day or so sure, but if it's once in a while isn't it a bittttt different to buy second hand? I'm not sure myself but I have wondered that.

I LOVE your dress, and I love the way you've styled it 3 times! I think my favourite is the third look :)

  11. THUMBS UP for the dress. This pattern is perfekt to you. And I can´t wait to see more of your DIY-Dresses. ;-)

I think it´s good thing to think about your own purchasing behavior. Often I also think: do you realy need this or that ... but from time to time there sit a little devil on my shoulder who whispers "You would look soooo good with these shoes ... and isn´t this nail polish so perfect to that dress ...and isnt´t that ring pretty cute". :-))) ..... and there is also an serious illness ... the addiction for fabrics an sewing my own dresses... since two years no chance to curing ist.

    1. We do use a bread machine. Two reasons: 1. Ivan's mom gave us one that she wasn't using. 2. Our oven doesn't work!

  28. I totally agree with your new project, and I love it!
First, your dress is amazing! The fabric is very cute. Well done job.

I love the handmade clothes, and I love the people who wear self-made clothes! I am very proud when people ask me, where I bought my new dress/pants/shirts etc. and I can reply them my clothes are handmade! I also love the handmade jewelry.

I love sewing and making clothes. I finished many garment since I send you an e-mail. Sometimes, I mess up some clothes, then I leave them semi-finished, and they are waiting for finishing. I have got a heap of fabric in my room.

One thing you don't know about me: I love the fabric stores! The owner of the local fabric store is my friend. ( She is much older than me!) I can't resist to te many cute fabric.

So, sorry for the long comment. Good luck to your new project! Can't wait! ;))

I definitely know the dilemma of wanting to simplify and wanting to buy. I do this thing where in the beginning of the year I flip all my clothes hangers one direction and as I wear clothes, flip the hanger another way. I'm about to start purging the clothes that I haven't worn that entire time, those hangers don't lie.

    1. Making your own clothes can be more expensive or it can be waaaaay cheaper. Most of my fabric was thrifted or grabbed while it was on sale. All of the patterns are thrifted as well and only cost $1 or so. If you are buying brand new patterns and fabric it can get really pricey though, you're right!

I stopped buying anything but necessities a few years ago because, well, I had no money and therefore no choice. Now that I CAN afford to buy myself things, I actually don't really want to - there aren't many things which seem special enough or good enough quality to spend my hard-earned money on! I love this new sensible me.

  46. i started reading your first paragraph and was like oh my goodness, this is me and my mister right now. we are going die hard into self sustainability, going to farmers markets, we are converting our flower gardens to now be veggie gardens, we have eliminated (as much as we can) plastics from our lives, we are making our own soaps, shampoos, sunscreen, salves etc (i'm even seriously considering opening a business - i already came up with the name and logo. we have watched just about every documentary made within the past 10 years on our food culture and ridiculous practices when it comes to how we treat this planet. i have all these amazing ideas and great things coming up for my blog to share with everyone. i hope you will join me in this "revolution" of sorts to make baby steps of getting this planet back on track. it's awesome to see someone else with the same views.

However, at the moment I don't have much time/energy to make those things (we just moved into our first house, woot woot!). I'll get back into the swing of things soon I hope.
