restyle :: suitcases

Ever since I saw Rachel's tutorial on covering suitcases with pretty fabric I have been itching to try it. As you may have already seen I covered a suitcase for our bedroom in my most favourite fabric ever (so far).

I had these two suitcases that I wasn't crazy about the colour of so I decided to paint them as well as cover the tops in fabric.
I love the fabric on the pink one. I'm on the fence about the fabric on the purple one though. I might keep my eyes open for something that will look even prettier.

If anyone is interested I used Martha Stewart high gloss craft paint in 'Hydrangea Purple' and 'Amaranth'. The purple took about three coats to cover while the pink took four.

  1. Oh wow this is such a great idea, I hadn't seen the original tutorial but just has a quick look and it looks suprisingly simple. I definitely think painting the suitcases adds an extra level of cuteness to this project. I am going to add 'old suitcases' to my ever growing list of vintage goodies to look out for!

  2. From curiosity, how does the paint feel to the touch when it is dried? I have a suitcase that a friend collaged for me when we were in college together, but the finish on it remained tacky to the touch. I don't know what she used, but it seemed a neat idea at the time. 10 years later, it still feels sticky and is covered with a layer of dust that won't wipe off! I totally love this idea, though: and it seems a great use for vintage fabric that may be a bit worse for the wear in some places. =)

  15. I love this, with the paint job, I have been forever on the hunt for suitcases to refurb that aren't too terribly beat on the inside. Once I find the perfect set I'm going to have to get to work on the same!

  18. What a great idea. Love them all.

    My favorite colours this spring are also pink, light green (we call them "erbse" = pea) and yellow. I will show an outfit on this "me made wednesday" in these colours.

    Can´t wait for your next vloging. ;-)

    Wish you a great week.

  19. What an adorable set of suit cases! Ah I love them! I am curious to know what kind of paint you used and if you recommend these solely for decorative purposes or if you thought they might travel well?

    1. The ones I painted and put fabric on are the ones I use decoratively. Ivan thinks i should try to put fabric on the ones we use for travel as well!

      I used Martha Stewart craft paint and I mentioned the colours in the blog post.

  21. Ah those look great! I think if I tried my fabric would be bubbly or messed up on the edges. Yours are done so well. Love the colors you painted them, too!

    1. thank you! It was actually really easy to put the fabric on. I started from one side and flattened it as I went along. I only put glue on one third or half of it at a time.

  23. I painted one of my suitcases as well! I was planning on using a pretty vintage sheet to do Rachel's tutorial, but after painting 2 coats of yellow to no avail, I gave up and spray painted it pink. This was even worse than trying to paint it! :/ tear. I still did the fabric cover tutorial, but my suitcase looks so gross now. Good to know that painting it CAN in fact be done!

    I'm on the look out for another mini suitcase! Yours look fab, love that fabric on the purple one.

  24. Hey Elycia these looks amazing!! When you painted them did you use a foam brush or a regular brush? They look so nice and smooth. I painted a suitcase in the past and it looked bumpy so I was just curious.
