thrift find :: the ones that got away

Hello there,

Here I am again to reminisce about the ones that got away...thrift finds that is! There is quite a bit of heartbreak in this batch. Here goes...
What: Owl/peacock (?)  embroidery
Where: Florida (Goodwill or Salvation Army, can't remember!)
Why I loved it: The little guy is adorable and the colours are pretty great too!
Why I didn't buy it: This thing was DIRTY! As adorable as it was it also grossed me out a little. I don't know if you are getting the full effect of how yucky this thing was from the photo. Also, this thrift store was the stinkiest one I had ever been in. It really smelled like pee and I couldn't be sure that this piece hadn't been peed on.
Do I wish I bought it: Kind of! As gross as I just made it sound, looking at this photo makes me wish I had have taken a chance on it and tried to clean it up.

What: Cat plate
Where: Value Village
Why I loved it: Cats + yarn...need I say more?
Why I didn't buy it: I think I was trying to be good and not buy everything that I saw and loved.
Do I wish I bought it: No. For this one, looking at the photo and admiring it's cuteness is good enough.
What: Boy with Guitar art
Where: Ohio (that barn place...help me out here Kaylah)
Why I loved it: I love this kind of picture and Ivan plays guitar so it reminds me of him.
Why I didn't buy it: I have no idea!
Do I wish I bought it: Heck yes! I can picture this in my office hanging on the wall in front of my desk. Or in our bedroom. Or the living room. It is adorable and I really wish I had have picked this little guy up.
What: Table and chairs
Where: Antique Attic Avenue (EDIT)
Why I loved it: This is my dream kitchen table and chairs. It was the most perfect colour ever and it was in amazing condition.
Why I didn't buy it: The amazingness of this set was only surpassed by the expensiveness. Too much money!
Do I wish I bought it: Yes and no. It breaks my heart that I don't own this but I'm happy I didn't drop that much money on it.

Do you have any recent thrift finds that you loved but that didn't make it home with you?

  1. That barn place? Hahah. What?! The one where we both bought dresses last summer, where the lady is really nice to me?

  2. Barn place in Ohio? Was it maybe in Amish country? I mean, I know I'm not Kaylah, LOL. But it's the first place I thought of... and reminds me that I need to go there when summer starts.
That table and chairs set is gorgeous but I sure bet it was a pretty penny!

  5. That table set is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I would have probably spent too much on that guy to bring it home with me :) Which leads me to ask do you ever buy anything and regret how much you spent, or when you get it home you realize you already own too many x, y, or z?

    Have a lovely weekend!

  11. Elycia, I really enjoy these posts! It's neat being able to see the photos and read about your thought process. I love thrifting as well, and it can be *so* difficult to decide on what to purchase and what to put back. I check your blog daily and thought I should comment for once instead of just lurking. : ) Have a great weekend!! - Morgan

  12. i am in love with that bird but i can see its dirtiness. its just so darn cute though- i wonder if it could have cleaned up - but i guess the thought of pee smell probably would have had me not buying either!

  13. 1. I LOVE this post! I think I might do a post like this on my blog and I'll link back to this one. SUCH a great idea bc we all know we have those items that just didn't make the cut!

    2. I love that you said "that barn place" bc my husband and I never know the names of places: just the setup, what we found there, and other random memories. hahaha love it.

  14. Oh that table!! I would have paid up to about $70 for it, I think. I just love the color and style so much.

  15. I love reading about your thrift finds that got away! I usually leave a thrift store with a general sense of regret and pity for all the things I couldn't afford to adopt.

  16. Oh man, I would've probably paid whatever they were asking for that kitchen table & chair set! It looks brand new! That sort of thing would probably go for like $500 here in Austin.

That bird guy is too cute, but looks like he might've been hanging out in a back alley or around some other unsavory operation...you made the right decision!

  17. I think Antique Attic's prices have gone up even more from when they opened up. I saw this awesome needle point there not too long ago-but it was 30 dollars. I love Granny's on Ottawa-I signed up for their facebook so I can see whenever they get new things in because they go so fast.

  18. I would love that table and chairs set too! Omg gorgeous!

Maybe you could try making your own embroidered version of that owl, since you have the picture of it to help ;)

  19. OMG, I have two pink chairs (why only two, I am not sure!) that look like a "sister" set to the blue ones!! My pink ones were also thrifted (score!!) for $10 for the two!!! EEP! I'll have to take a picture & post a link!

  20. I totally posted one of these earlier this week featuring a single item: a vintage seersucker pink maternity romper. Yep. It was just a bit too ridiculous and unflattering.

  21. I LOVE that table too. Don't you hate when something is so much moeny and as much as you want it, you just can't. I found the Pyrex refrigerator dishes when I was home last week, but they were about $70 for all three of them and I just couldn't do it on my college budget.

  24. I was out yesterday at House of Vintage, a huge store in Portland, and saw that silly white cat with its tongue out from your last post about things that got away. Le'cat got away from me as well but it did elicit a giggle :)

  25. I feel like I almost always have a regret or two after thrifting, but I know I can't buy everything other wise the house my fiance and I are building would already be filled to the brim hehe.

  30. I love Antique Attic! I've discovered that you can bargain with those guys a bit depending on whether the item you are looking at is on consignment or not. Just so you know for the next time you see another amazing table like that one. It is so perfect! I'm sad that one got away from you!

  33. Oh my god, that first one looks so so dirty... i'm pretty sure it was probably on white fabric first and whoever made it smoked so much that it has now become that horrible browny/yellow colour! You should totally have brought it home with you though, it would have been an awesome little challenge!

  40. Oh God this thread hits home. This week I was outwitted by maybe a mere 10 steps away, by another girl who got to the item first. She didn't see me walking and picked up what appears to a square vintage camera in a leather case. So like a defeated person I stood behind her in line to see how much it cost after she decided to buy it. And to add to the wound in my stomach, it was only $5.99. It's been a week and I am still festering over if I had just gone to the electronics section when I first walked in.

  41. Aww, that little peacock/owl looks so sad that you didn't take him home with you! x
