photos :: ripple crochet book

Hi!

Last week I saw this at the thrift store, got super excited and grabbed it as quickly as I could. My absolute favourite crochet pattern is the ripple in all it's forms so this book was definitely a must have. I love looking through old craft books and magazines so I thought I would share a few photos in case you love it to.
This is the perfect ripple afghan in my opinion and according to this book, "The Easiest Afghan in the World". Even more perfect! It is similar to the one I already made but I think I need to make one like this too.
What a fancy cape!
I wonder how realistic a crochet bathing suit would really be. Anyone have any experience with one?
And even a little something fancy for the boys.
The only way this book could have been better is if it was in colour. I love looking at the colour combinations that others use! Aren't these patterns so fun?

  1. I'm madly in love with that one piece bathing suit. I'm tempted to make one and see how it works.

  2. Ripple crochet is the best vintage crochet pattern EVAH! And indeed, too bad that it's in black & white, but think of all the fun color combo's you'll be creating yourself! ;)

  3. My mom once made a crocheted Bikini for me. As far as I can tell: it looks totally great but they dry reeeeaaally slowly. So it's definitly more a thing for sunbathing ;-)

  4. When my mom was young she crocheted a bikini. Keep in mind that those things get very VERY loose when wet. So only do it if you can keep dry;)

Those afghans are very very nice though!

  8. OMG. I started busting up laughing when I saw the crochet vest. That is amazing and I hope you make one for Ivan and take a photo of him with a camera like that one.

  10. Ok, you crochet (pretty please with sugar on top would you teach me)... so it makes sense you pick these up. I have a growing (quite large) collection of these types of books/leaflets... crochet & knitting. I can't stop! lol. I keep telling myself that one day I will have a moment to breathe & learn how to make these beautiful things. Plus it is so fun to look at the pictures!

  11. Oh fun, I love these books too! I'm an avid crocheter, but still have yet to try any ripple patterns for some dumb reason.
The bikini is so cute...I used to have an awesome bright green one, and it stayed on just fine - but it was lined with non-stretchy fabric, which is key if you actually want use for swimming.

  12. Oh my! I wish I could find one of thses books with a granny square theme...I also wish I could crochet. I learned to knit and know crochet seems SOOO complicated. I knit a bikini top-I don't think it'll ever see water, but it looks awesome possum under tank tops!

  15. I too LOVE old craft books! They are so fun. I even love their musty smell. Wow, that afghan you made is so gorgeous! I have a little obsession with purple and green. Now I want to learn to crochet even more than I did before!

  16. I like that ripple skirt!

I made a crochet bathing suit top:

It was acrylic yarn. I crocheted tightly but still had holes so put in some padding. I don't think crochet swim tops are good for busty unless it's a good halter piece to keep 'em in place. I didn't wear it out haha

  17. Aww man! I want one of those swimsuits!

And, I think the tie is so fun!

    Great find!
It makes me want to go thrifting for crochet books soon. =)

  19. That bathing suit is totally possible. My suggestion would be to make it with a blend of some kind, like Berroco Weekend (75% Acrylic/25% Cotton). Cotton on it's own will sag and stretch when wet; the acrylic will help hold shape and will improve the wear/longevity of it. But man, that zig-zag is so well integrated into the shape of the top and bottom. Love that!

    1. Good suggestion, thanks! I know, I love the way the bottoms look with the zig zag at the top.

  20. For some odd reason, I thought the title of this post was 'nipple crochet book' and I giggled, like a schoolgirl. Onto more ripple-y things, I am really drawn to the bathing suit and skirt. I made a ripple blanket recently as well, a sprog sized one. Ripple madness.

    1. hahaha! Now did you think it was going to be about crocheting nipples or crocheting those nipple cover things?

      Delete
    2. Both! There are loads of patterns for knitted boobs out there, why not for crocheted nipples. Or crotchety nipples.

  21. I love the crochet 2-piece but I definitely wouldn't trust my crochet skills up against the water :) The skirt is really cute too!

  28. I actually really like the crocheted one-piece, which is strange because I normally don't like crocheted clothes, but it looks so cute and comfy. I love old magazines and books as the photos always get me thinking.

  29. My sister bought me a crochet kit for my birthday many moons ago and it included three projects. A headband, a bikini, and a granny square purse. I never made the bikini but remember my mom telling me how she made herself a crochet bathing suit in the 70s. I asked her how she felt about her nipples always popping through and she said she never got it wet. A bathing suit you don't get wet? Odd mom. Just odd...

  30. What a great find. I love--LOVE--vintage crochet and knitting pattern books. Especially those stitch books. I really loved your zig zag afghan that you posted about a while ago and have been inspired to make my own.

  31. First off, I have been following for a few months now and just want to say that I love your blog! I thoroughly enjoy the ripple as well and the tie is killing me... I would love to see someone rocking it! I just made two ripple blankets for a friend's newborn twins and currently making another one... It's addicting for sure!

  32. Those are some great photos and that ripple skirt is fabulous!

  33. Crocheting the bathing suit is totally doable. I would suggest not to use cotton or really any plant fiber they'll sag when wet and who wants to make a bathing suit that can't get wet. You should look for a nylon tape yarn. Something like this: http://www.iceyarns.com/summer_lase

  34. I love that pattern for a blanket! And the bathing suit is seriously adorable but I can't see it holding up well when soaked with water. I feel like it'd slip. But please make a tie! That would be amazing. You should hold a crochet session to show people (like me) how to crochet. I've tried a few times but I couldnt get the hang of it.
